Máté Petrány Gets Fired from Gawker, Jalopnik Still Posts His Work

Máté Petrány had three stories on the Jalopnik front page today, even though someone knew he was getting let go. For an extra kick in the ribs, his last comment on Kinja, referencing Peter Orosz’s influence and insight working for Jalopnik:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

So Jalopnik muckety-mucks knew about Mate getting let go today and probably before, but still had his stories put up? Stay classy.

Kinja'd!!!

ETA: I’m sure Jalopnik staffers are about as happy with this (and Sean) as Máté is, but it is still shitty.

I sort of wonder if they offered to pay him for any work that was ready to go. I think he has 3-4 posts up today, which is way more than normal and obviously so high due to his firing.

Damage control. Gawker isn’t a company that’s too big to fail...and Hogan is going after them for what’s probably much more than they’re even worth. So they’re shuttering blogs and firing staff in a desperate attempt to keep the lights on?

He was let go this morning from what his Twitter reads, and two of the posts occurred after the fact. I’m hopeful that he was paid for them, and I hope he received some sort of severance package but it still seems shitty to me.

If/when Jalopnik gets shut down, and if/when they go under and kinja.com domain stops working, is anyone here going to start a blog somewhere else? Is there a contingency plan?

Kinja'd!!! Mercedes Streeter > If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent
05/17/2016 at 13:08

Kinja'd!!!0

Indeed. I think they were probably scheduled posts, in which assuming Gawker works on a per-click basis, means he’s entitled to pay for his work...but of course also means they would get posted after he got let go.

It’s really sad to me that the marketing people here are so stupid an inexperienced.

YOU HAVE SERIOUSLY UNDERESTIMATED, the amount of people that view this different sites solely because of their core site like jalopnik or oppo are awesome. IF YOU DIMINISH THESE SITES we will no longer be coming around to click your little top articles from gizmodo and shittabel etc....

Not sure. Máté would be able to shed some light on that but I don’t think he’ll be sharing any information for a while. As someone else pointed out, Budapest is about 6hrs ahead EST in the US, so he would have found out around 7:00pm his time I think (assuming his Jalopnik FB privileges were pulled 8:16am EST/7:16pm local time. More than likely he came to work and did a full day before being told he was being let go.

For OppsoiteLock? AFAIAC, Kinja can die in fire. Pre-Kinja, starred comments worked so, so much better. With Kinja, only way to understand replies to your posts is to figure out the context of the reply. Huge pain in the butt when you have multiple replies that in turn get a lot of replies too.

I think that they see a lot more and realize a lot more about how things work than you do.

Oppositelock has grown to be rather large over time, but we are still peanuts compared to the Jalopnik main page. The Jalopnik main page, in turn, is peanuts compared to the titans that Gawker and Jezebel - each of which are big enough to make Jalopnik and Oppositelock combined look like the 90-pound nerd in the high school wrestling class.

When push comes to shove, it all comes down to money. Oppositelock survives, and may well prove to the Kinja equivalent of a cockroach in a post-Hulkmania nuclear winter, due to the fact that it has negligible costs associated with it. None of us are paid in any way, even as moderators. Sites like Jalopnik and Kotaku, while much smaller than Gawker and Jezebel, have at least been able to pull in just enough revenue to justify the cost of their existence - though now it seems that Jalopnik in particular is having a pretty hard time of it.

Should Jalopnik get shut down, the net decrease in revenue likely wouldn’t be much in the way of a hit, particularly when you factor in the costs being saved by no longer having to run the site.

While I sure as hell don’t like or agree with Gawker Media’s general approach to how they do these things, it’s hard not to understand what drives them to make the decisions that they do.

It sucks, but there it is. Welcome to shitsburgh, compliments of Nick Denton and AJ Daulerio.

Hey Vi - perhaps this is the time to organize an emergency exit strategy?

I’m thinking something if the lights turn off tomorrow.

Like let’s decide on a domain to go to if gawker goes tits up.

It would take 200$ to get a domain register and hosted for a year on a WordPress host. A VPS would be 20$ a month. So easy alternatives exist.

I don't know journalism specifically, but I have always seen this done — loan officers or salespeople could be working a deal, get fired, and it becomes someone else's deal to close. I could finish a report for tomorrow, get fired this afternoon, and the report is still used. Doesn't seem odd to me, even though it is sad. Technically they could go onto his computer and use just about anything he was working on. Or he could countersue, then he and Hulk Hogan could run Gawker for the rest of time — slash Gawker and Jezebel, then make Jalopnik the flagship. The logo would have to be a PM Yellow Supra, naturally.

I can understand that at times, companies have to let people go.

But I would prefer if they are open and upfront about it... by first talking to the person, letting them know the reasons and that they’ll do all they can to help them find another job... like providing good references.

Then follow that up with a public post by the person’s supervisor and asking everyone to give that person a fond fairwell.

Maybe I’m just being naive...
